Two goals from the Brazilian and one from Lionel Messi saw the Blaugrana move two points clear at the top of La Liga, although victory was more of a necessity than a great triumph with Madrid’s two sides in action afterwards.
Even though Barcelona took all three points at Camp Nou, if the first-half injury Valdes sustained is serious then their bid for silverware on three fronts has been severely damaged.

The goalkeeper spilled a Fabian Orellana free-kick and as he leapt to collect it, fell awkwardly and appeared to damage his right knee.
Valdes was in great pain as he was taken off on a stretcher underneath a blanket and as he is planning on leaving in the summer, may have played his last game for the club he has served for his entire career.
Iniesta was withdrawn at half-time, complaining of discomfort in his left calf but it is thought this was just precautionary.
The game had started so well for Barcelona, with Messi skipping through the Celta defence and finishing with ease, only to be adjudged offside by a fraction.
And after just five minutes Messi dropped inside from the right and played in Alexis, who unselfishly squared for Neymar to tap in to an empty net.
The last few months have not been easy for Neymar, who was out injured over the winter and has flattered to deceive after returning to the first team.
On Sunday against Real Madrid he didn’t track back to help Dani Alves and Angel Di Maria thrived on the left flank.
Tata Martino benched Alves, along with Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets, ahead of Saturday’s visit to local rivals Espanyol.
Veteran midfielder Xavi, who pulled the strings against Madrid, wasn’t even included in the squad.
Neymar played as if he had a point to prove, bursting past the Celta Vigo defence soon after his goal and trying to pick out Alexis, but the ball was cut out in the nick of time.
The Brazil forward was the threat again when Adriano fired in a cross which he dived for but narrowly failed to get his head to. And once more when Messi slid the ball to him, but Neymar hit the side netting from a tricky angle.
After a quarter of an hour the Argentine was played in on goal himself, moved the ball to his favoured left foot and seemed poised to double Barcelona’s lead.
But uncharacteristically Messi’s finish was too close to Celta Vigo’s keeper Yoel Rodriguez Oterino, who denied him.
Celta Vigo’s first opportunity of the game came when Adriano handled the ball outside the box.
Initially referee Miguel Angel Ayza Gamez pointed to the spot, but was informed of his mistake and changed his mind.
Orellana took the free kick and Valdes saved it but sustained his injury and was substituted for reserve goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto.
With the La Liga title race closer than ever, a Champions League quarter-final beckoning next week and the Copa del Rey final soon approaching, this was an untimely blow.
To ease the pain, Messi soon added another, taking Iniesta’s through pass into the area, rounding Yoel and rolling home. He made it look too easy, as usual.
Later in the second half Pinto showed just why losing Valdes might be such a blow, when his clearance hit Mario Bermejo and nearly rebounded in to his own net.
Pinto ran back to clear the ball but only ended up colliding with his goalpost.
Luis Enrique, the former Barcelona star, could do little to get his Celta Vigo side back in the game.
Some had suggested that he could use this game to audition for Martino’s job, if the coach leaves in the summer.
Barcelona put another in the net through Fabregas early in the second half but he was correctly ruled offside.
