Nicklas Bendtner does not have the face of a baby. Nor usually the clinical aim of an assassin, but the hairy, misfiring Dane came off the bench and soured Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s proposed return to English football.
In other circumstances, Solskjaer may have appreciated more than most the late drama and heroic role of Arsenal’s super-sub.
But it cannot have been the outcome the next Cardiff manager was hoping for when he jetted in from Norway to attend the game at the Emirates Stadium in the company of the club’s eccentric billionaire owner Vincent Tan.

'He has gone through some difficult periods but I told him before the game he was back to his level, where I want him to be.
'If he continues to develop like that, he can be back in the team. Unfortunately he got injured and it looks like weeks not days. I’m very sad, not just for us but especially for him also. Usually he’s not a fragile player. It was bad luck.'
Bendtner’s injury is worrying for Arsenal who are also without Olivier Giroud ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup derby against Tottenham. Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil were missing yesterday but Giroud’s absence was most keenly felt.
Lukas Podolski started the game at centre-forward and looked well out of touch. Podolski may be a better finisher than Giroud but he does not lead the line and combine with those around him.

In the book: Referee Jonathan Moss shows Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker a yellow card
Arsenal started slowly, finding it hard to penetrate Cardiff for the first hour. Jack Wilshere thought he was tripped by Gary Medel and Craig Noone thought Monreal had handled but referee Jon Moss was within his rights to deny both penalty appeals.
The game exploded with Arsenal’s double change, 25 minutes from time. Tomas Rosicky added urgency and thrust to the midfield - which brought Santi Cazorla to life - and Bendtner provided a better arrowhead to Wenger’s team.
At about the same time, Cardiff lost Jordan Mutch, their best attacking outlet, with a hamstring injury.

Mertesacker ought to have scored but these near misses lifted the mood. A goal seemed likely and pressure steadily increased with Wilshere, Cazorla and Walcott all going close. Steven Caulker cleared from Sagna but the resistance was finally broken by Bendtner.
Wilshere and Rosicky combined cleverly to release Walcott, who clipped the ball over Marshall’s dive for the second and Arsenal left the field with the exhausted delight of a team which had produced the sort of display that counts in a title race.
Cardiff moved a little closer to relegation trouble and a little closer to appointing Manchester United’s former baby-faced assassin as their new manager.
