Mutharika In Salima: Nothing To Negotiate About Lake Malawi
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) President Peter Mutharika says there is nothing to negotiate about the ownership of Lake Malawi.
Malawi is coiled into a lake ownership wrangle with Tanzania, with the later claiming the northern part of the world’s most fresh water body.
But speaking at Chipoka in Salima on Saturday, Mutharika said the two countries have nothing to negotiate about, as the whole of Lake Malawi belongs to Malawi.
“No need to negotiate, Lake Malawi belongs to Malawi, and it will always belong to Malawi. Tanzania is only taking advantage of the weak leadership we currently have, but deep down their heart they know that not even an inch of that lake belong to them.
“When we take back government next year, all this nonsense will end. And I will deploy more ships on that lake to boost out economy and create jobs for our young people,” said Mutharika.
Ironically, Mutharika, an American trained law professor, has not been participating in President Joyce Banda’s consultative meetings with opposition leaders on the Lake.
On Saturday, Mutharika conducted whistle stop tours in Lilongwe,Dedza and Salima districts.
